Title: Finding Gaps and Framing Questions: The Skills of Research Question Selection
Abstract: This interactive seminar is designed for prospective MA and PhD students in the early stages of selecting a thesis research question. It aims to equip participants with essential skills to identify studied phenomena, recognize gaps in the literature, and formulate clear, specific, and relevant research questions. The seminar will introduce methods for developing effective search strategies, including constructing search syntax and creating annotated bibliographies. It will also cover techniques for identifying gaps in existing scholarship. Participants will learn how to critically evaluate multiple potential research questions based on these gaps and select the most suitable one. In addition to theoretical insights, the workshop will feature hands-on tasks and concrete examples, followed by a brief reflection and discussion session. Participants are encouraged to come prepared with questions, though all are welcome, regardless of their current stage in the process.
